From The Chairman
The Moruya Racecourse is alive with the sound of construction and one can feel the sense of purpose and enthusiasm of all involved, as the work has finally begun in earnest. The ambitious building program has been broken into three major components, the first being the jockeys’ rooms which have been gutted in preparation for major reconstruction and refurbishment. The Board has long pushed for this and it is fitting that this component is the first to be commenced. Executive Officer Ken Brown held extensive consultations with the CEO of the Jockeys’ Association, male and female jockeys riding at Moruya and on other tracks, and NSW Country Racing representatives and the result will be a state of the art facility for the special people who risk their lives daily on our racing and training tracks.
The second stage will be the repositioning and refurbishment of the Stewards’ rooms, the roof of which will become an extended deck area on the track side of the Members. This new deck space will provide an extra viewing platform for Members and will be the first section completed of the proposed extended Members facilities, the second being an enclosed extension towards the betting area.
The third stage will be the major remodeling and upgrading of the Judge’s Tower with particular regard to the new and extraordinarily onerous Fire safety requirements now in the building codes. It is appropriate at this stage for me to thank the team at Edwards Constructions, their consultants and advisors and especially Deputy Chair, Chris Gandy, all of whom have done an enormous amount of work over many months to get the project to this stage. Now we can dare to dream of a completion date and it may be sooner than previously thought.
Through all of this, extensive consultation has ensured little interruption to racing and training and again I thank Ken Brown, Edwards Constructions and all contractors for their willingness to adjust schedules wherever possible.
Funding arrangements for infrastructure projects on the course can be complex, but for racing infrastructure the expected ratio is 80% Racing NSW and 20% MJC. You may be interested to know that the Club has spent $854,811 of its own funds in recent years on projects to mitigate the effects of climate change, to improve the race day experience for Members, racegoers, sponsors and participants and to enhance the appearance of the course and facilities.
Recently the Board initiated correspondence with the newly appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer Racing NSW, Graeme Hinton, and received a most encouraging immediate response in which he stated his appreciation for the work we are doing here and his anticipation of further collaboration with MJC when the need arises.
Consistently large fields and happy trainers, jockeys and owners justify my often expressed assertion that Moruya Jockey Club produces the best racing and training surfaces in country NSW and a genuine, wonderful, country racing experience for all racegoers.
You will notice some changes to the course generally and to the Members in particular, for the next few race meetings, and I thank you for your patience. The completed project will be something of which we can all be proud.
